Even the most well-kept of households can be a nightmare for dust allergy sufferers. Just like normal wear and tear, natural dust occurs as a result of day to day life. However, left to its own devices, it can build up and can become a problem for the majority of us who are left red nosed and itchy by too many dust particles in the air. But no fear – although the fight against dust can feel like an unending battle, here are some simple tips and tricks to help target the more dust prone areas of your house, and put an end to those sneezing fits. There is hope for all allergy sufferers!
1. Vacuuming and mopping
A seemingly obvious, but often underestimated one for how effective it can be when done right. These everyday household cleaning tasks can make a huge difference depending on how thoroughly we do them, and the equipment that we use. First of all make sure to invest in a decent vacuum – preferably one with an air filter and a range of suction settings. Always mopping appropriate surfaces after you vacuum (using a good, clean mop) ensures that you catch the remaining dust particles in the corners that your vacuum couldn’t reach. Don’t forget to regularly clean blinds, radiators, and other dust traps too – especially in winter, when we tend to open windows less, and love to spend more time in our homes.
2. Wooden floors
For the more severe sufferers among us, consider changing up your carpet for wooden flooring, or choosing an home that features them. Not to mention being easier to clean and maintain, opting for wooden floors over fabric carpets is one of the easiest ways to eliminate dust across your house. If this is too extreme a measure, there are still ways you can keep your carpets as dust-free as possible. Daily vacuuming of spaces that you use often, and vacuuming other areas at least once a week, is the fastest way to stop dust from settling. In addition to this, a professional carpet clean once or twice a year will not only get rid of any ingrained dust and dirt, but will refresh your space, and give a boost to your spring clean.
3. Pet care
We’re all familiar with staying on top of the stream of hair that our most beloved family member leaves on our furnishings (and clothes). Hair and dead skin cells are responsible for a high percentage of the dust that accumulates and spreads around our homes. Pet hair floats around easily, and often settles and gathers dust in the areas that we don’t see, as well in their favourite resting place. However, there is a way around it – simply keeping your pets well groomed, regularly ridding their fur of moulting hair, and frequently washing their bedding prevents the worst of it, and will no doubt make your pet happier too!
4. Tidy up
This is a big one – clutter. We all know it, and we all have it…One of the most dust-prone parts of any home are storage areas, where items we don’t use everyday are free to become home to thousands of dust mites that can be a major irritant to you or your kids. But there’s no need to throw away all your favourite first editions – the key here is to frequently dust books, ornaments, and all the other knick knacks that make your house a home. Clearing disordered chaos in our living spaces also makes it ten times easier and quicker to keep them clean – and regular and targeted cleaning is the key to dust busting.
5. Beat the dust!
A oldie but a goodie – regularly beating curtains, rugs, and cushions is one of the oldest tricks in the book when it comes to clearing your home of gathering dust. It is often our favourite creature comforts that bear the brunt of the most dust, including sofas, blankets, and cosy rugs. Take them outside and whack them with a blunt object until the clouds of that rise off disappear. It’s worth the effort – and will save you a fortune in tissues! Washing the covers of furnishings and bedding every few weeks also saves your living room and bedroom from the dust that can’t be avoided in our busy and hectic lives.
